Edinburgh

I ‘ve spent a little boring time since winter break started last week. Some friends came back their home countries and some of them won’t back to Edinburgh. In my think, my English is definitely improved than 3 months ago, but talking with native speaker isn’t easy yet. Of course, I didn’t expect that I could speak English well via just 3 months language course, but I felt pressure when I’ve thought about my goals which I have to achieve for my future.

I had a lot of time to think about my life and my wish throughout this year. What do I want? What should I do for my happiness? Well, simple questions but answers aren’t simple, because I have to consider many factors. However, next year will be important time to me. Stop thinking and just do something. I just wish I could got a wise eyes to grab a good opportunity which is given by the God.

Somehow, I’ve depressed tonight. I suppose the night which getting longer everyday caused my concerns. And I might miss my family and friends in Korea, and my cat as well.

I woke up at 9 AM in this morning and prepared cooking a beef steak which I had brought it at Tesco yesterday. Eunyoung and I usually like beef steak, but I haven’t try to cook it yet. Yesterday, I brought some beef and a source on the way back to home for today’s breakfast. I had sprinkled some peppers on both side of the beef and I waited for 1 hour for removing blood from it. After that, I cooked a steak and some vegetables such as a onion, a brocoli and a mushroom. Actually I haven’t cooked steak before, so I had to looking carefully at steak for prevent burning the beef. However, the steak was more good than I had expected, so Eunyoung and I could enjoyed a good breakfast.

Eunyoung wanted to buy a pair of socks, so we went out to the city centre after had a breakfast. Today is more warm than a normal autumnal day in Edinburgh. I wore less layer of clothes than last weekdays and Eunyoung and I walked slowly toward the city center. We suddenly met Shorty who is one of classmates of her college on the way. It was the first time I met her, and she seemed go to somewhere. After I said bye to Shorty, I asked to Eunyoung that where is she going. She said Shorty is going to the cafe in which exhibited some her works.
However, we found a strange scene at Princes Street. There was a big wheel next to Scot Monument and a small amusement park including a ice skating site. As I know, those amusements are things for Christmas, so I surprised when I saw them because there is so many days to Christmas.

Eunyoung brought two pair of socks and a skirt. She denied that she had any willing to buy the skirt even she had seen the skirt on the internet, but she decided to buy the skirt as soon as she saw it. Well, it doesn’t matter. The skirt looked good on her. Anyway, after that, we had a crepe on the way to the National Gallery of Scotland. Eunyoung had a good memory with crepe. When she have been in Paris, a crepe which she had on a street in Paris was tasty good, so we tried the crepe. But a good memory is just memory. The crepe which we brought beside the National Gallery was really bad for me and she said that it is the worst food we’ve had in Edinburgh. I agreed with her.
After we had eaten it, we suddenly met Eunyoung’s classmate – Sai and Laura – whilst looking at beautiful landscape of the city center. Actually I met Laura twice yesterday at ECA library. I didn’t have a good small talk with Laura because I was feeing awkward. I’ve always wanted talk with a native speaker, but it was really wasn’t easy when I faced with her. If I meet her again, I will try to make a good small talk.
However, we went to the National Gallery because Eunyoung haven’t been there yet. We’ve tried to go there sometimes, but we didn’t go there because of a bad weather or not enough time to visit there. There are many really beautiful paintings including Monet and Rembrandt. It is really a great thing that I can see these paintings whenever I want to see it.

Today I tried to another Korean food – Boodae soup: it is thick soup with a spam, a sausage, a onion, a mushroom, the Heinz Beans, a kimchi, a bacon, a minced beef and a Korean spicy source. I found a recipe on the internet and I really wanted to eat it. If I’m in Korea, I’ll go to restaurant when I would like eat it. However, I’m in Edinburgh now, so I have to cook it if I want to eat it. Although, It was the first time that I cooked this dish, it was so tasty good! It was really better than I had expected. And then, I was glad to add it on my cooking list.

I had wanted to go to the sea here. Last week, I heard about a certain beach from Yunyoung and I really wanted to go there but she didn’t know where it is. After then, I found out where it is while in Tom’s class in my school. A photo of the Bass Rock which Tom showed to us was the same as Yunyoung’s photo, so I found the small town like that – North Berwick.

These days, the daytime is getting shorter every day so I thought I should go soon if I want to go somewhere. Above all, I haven’t been outside of Edinburgh until now. Therefore, I travelled to North Berwick with my wife today. Woke up early, had brunch, prepared some sandwiches to take away and finally went out to catch the no. 124 bus at Haymarket. The bus fare was £6.70 per person including a return ticket and it took 1 and half hours to get there. I could see the beautiful outskirts of Edinburgh and some small towns on the way. There were wide green fields and many pretty houses. In addition, it was the first time that I had sat on the second deck of a bus here. I see a double deck bus every day but I haven’t been on second deck yet because I always go and come to school on foot. A change of view is always exciting and I liked the second deck of the bus as soon as I sat down.

After a pleasant journey, I arrived at North Berwick which is a small harbor town. There are two golf course beside the sea, and the small harbor. The town is very calm and quiet but many people came to see the beautiful beach. I went to the east end of the beach because there is small hill which is a good place to see the landscape of the beach. Also there is a golf course which is located beside the beach. I sat on a bench on the hill with my wife and ate the sandwich which I had prepared in the morning. The weather was really nice and the sky was clear but the wind on the hill was a little bit cold, so after we had eaten the sandwich, we walked down to the beach alongside the golf course.

Many people was walking along the beach with their dogs or their children. They seemed happy and also we were happy. We walked along the beach whilst looking around at the sea. I watched the waves for a few minutes and took some pictures. We spent some time on the beach for a while and headed to the high street because the wind was getting cold. Besides, I wanted to drink a cup of coffee before we left. We walked into a proper cafe on the high street and enjoyed a cup of coffee. It tasted good and we could get some warmth back into our bodies. We stayed there till we need to leave North Berwick. When we got on the bus, the sun had already set so the sky was soon dark. However, today is Bonfire’s night and Fabri and Carolina invited me to see some fireworks on Calton Hill yesterday. So I got off the bus on George Street and went to Calton Hill with my wife. I could see the fireworks here and there of Edinburgh for a while. I was surprised because I could see the fireworks at many places over the city. Anyway, I couldn’t find any friends because Calton Hill was so dark and there were a lot of people there. In addition to that, we were tired and cold so we headed back to my flat after a wille.

I went to Bruntsfield Evangelical Church last Sunday and it took 10 mins to get there by walking. It was the first time that I went to a church in Edinburgh so I was a bit of nervous and excited because I didn’t know anything about the church in the UK. Of course there are Korean churches in Edinburgh, but I wondered what a church service in here would be like. I thought it would be better to make a choice about a church after I had been to a church in Edinburgh.

However, the atmosphere of the church was very friendly and the the service was good. There were many praises and interesting arrangements, so I felt that it seems like a service for the youth of Korean churches. Maybe I’ll go to the church while I’m staying here.
There was a free lunch for young people after the service but I didn’t attend it because I had to do some other things at that time. In addition, my wife and I wanted go to the cafe – cafe Citron – for lunch last Sunday.

We found that cafe a few weeks ago and I wanted to go to there someday. The cafe Citron is a small but cozy cafe. A simple interior and a pretty color on the walls and doors, friendly staff, fresh and delicious food. There is everything I want in a cafe apart from a lovely cat. I ate a hot roll with a bacon and a sausage and my wife ate some tomate soup with bread, and it was a pleasant and delicious lunch. Above all, the tomato soup was really great!

I will go to the church tomorrow but I won’t go to cafe Ctiron for lunch because I might attend the free lunch for young people in the church. However, I already went there for lunch with Yujin, Yunyoung and my wife today. Maybe I will go to the cafe for lunch every single Saturday.

Yesterday, weather was really good and I wanted to go to a good cafe. So I texted to wife – ‘Shall we go to the Jenners?’ and after a while she replied ‘Yes! let’s go!!’. In fact we found the cafe on top floor in Jenners a few days ago and the cafe had a great view of city center so I want to go there soon.

However, I went to the cafe – House of Fraser – in Jenners yesterday and we had the afternoon tea special. It was just a cup of tea and home baked scone with jam and cream cheese but it was delicious. Fortunately we sat down a seat beside a window and I could see a gorgeous landscape onto a window. There was a few elder people and quite. It was a great place to talking over a cup of tea. Sunshine shone and air was not too cold. Everything was perfect!

I had expectation about a tea of UK before I came here and the tea which I choose had sweet scent and taste even though it was a tea bag. Also the scone with jam and cream cheese really good tasted. Most of all, it was cheap! Maybe I will often go to there for drink a tea and others.
